Introduction

Dubbed as the highest trekking peak in Nepal, Mera Peak (6476m) is located in the Makalu Barun National Park. The journey to the top of the mountain offers a one-of-a-kind adventure in the Himalayas.

Overview of Mera Peak Climbing

As most of the trips in Nepal, your journey to the Mera Peak begins in Kathmandu. Then, a short and scenic flight will take you to Lukla. From here, the trek begins as you follow the Dudh Koshi River south towards Paiya.

Likewise, the trail continues south and ascends the Chutok La Pass. Then, you reach Panggom as the Sherpa culture and traditions welcome you trek through one village to another. The trail takes you to Ningsow and then to Chhetra Khola. Next, you begin to travel north and continue across the pasture lands and meadows.

The gradually ascending trail will take you to Kothe. Then, you continue in the company of the Charpate Himal ranges and settle at Thangnak. Here, you acclimatize for a day and prepare to scale the Mera Peak.

You will ascend to the Mera Peak Base Camp and prepare for the ascent to the top of the peak. The uphill climb entails many steep inclines across icy paths and steep terrain. The summit of the Mera Peak offers a surreal panorama of the Himalayas, including the Mt. Everest (8848m), Makalu (8463m), and Charpate Himal range among others.

After enjoying the views, you begin the return trek. On the way back, you take a slightly different route and cross the Zatrwa La Pass (4610m). Then, you reach Lukla and fly back to Kathmandu.

Itinerary

You land at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, as per your scheduled flight. At the exit, our staff will be waiting to welcome you warmly, and after brief introductions, you head to the hotel. You refresh and meet the staff again for dinner. Over dinner, you’ll discuss the details of the trip with them.
Today, you visit some of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites alongside preparing for the trip. After breakfast, you head to Boudhanath Stupa and visit some of the monasteries. Then, the second destination is the Pashupatinath Temple. Explore the holy site as you witness the open cremation ceremony. Next, you head to Kathmandu Durbar Square and first have a Newari style lunch. Then, you head to visit the museum and other landmarks of the square. The last destination is Swayambhunath Temple, where you can see incredible panoramas of the valley. During the sightseeing tour, you can buy/rent items needed for the trek.
From the domestic airport, you depart to Lukla. The flight takes you high above the clouds, and you get to see amazing views of the terrain. As you head north, you get to see mountains like Langtang, Manaslu, Lhotse, and Everest. Once you reach Lukla, you will meet the local guide and porters who will accompany you. After resting for a while, you start to trek. Descending from Lukla, you walk through forests and reach Surke. You pass by some settlement areas and finally reach Paiya for overnight stay.
After breakfast, you go downhill to cross a wooden bridge as you head towards the Dudh Koshi River. This part of the trail can get slippery and narrow at some points. After crossing Kuri La Pass, you walk through a forest filled with rhododendron and bamboo trees. As you walk into the Dudh Koshi Valley, you arrive at Panggom for an overnight stay at the teahouse.
After breakfast, you head towards Panggom La pass. From the top of the pass, you can see amazing views of the terrain. Next, you descend to Peseng Kharka Khola. Following the river, you pass by settlement areas and then reach Ningsow Stream. After walking along the stream for a while, you reach Ningsow village for overnight stay.
The trail today goes up and down several times. You resume the trek after breakfast. You walk past thick forests filled with rhododendrons and bamboo. Then, a stream appears, and you walk along with it. En route, you may get to see glimpses of Mera Peak and Salpa. The trail goes into Makalu Barun National Park and then, you arrive at Chhetra Khola for overnight stay.
After breakfast, you continue the trek and walk along the banks of the Majang Khola. After walking a while, you reach Hinku Khola and follow the river. The trail goes along dense bamboo and pine forests. Enjoying the views of Mera Peak and Hinku Valley, you cross Sanu Khola and reach Kothe for an overnight stay at camp.
After breakfast, you commence the trek along the ridges of Hinku Valley. You get to see spectacular views of the Mera Peak. You pass by settlement area like Gondishung, which is the summer residence for herders. Walking along the grazing area, you arrive at Lumbasumba Gompa, a 200-year-old monastery that is sacred to the local people. Indulge in a prayer session and then continue the trek. After a while, you arrive at Thangnak for an overnight stay at the lodge.
Since you’ll be going to elevations higher than 5,000 m, it is essential to familiarize yourself with the altitude. Today, the day is spent acclimatizing. You will also hike to Charpate Himal Glacier and explore it. There are many shops and lodges in the village so that you can interact with the local people as well as other trekkers.
Today, you head towards Mera Peak Base Camp. The trek commences after breakfast, and you make your way towards a steep trail. Along the way, you pass by glaciers and moraines. In the end, you reach Khare and set up camps for overnight stay. Khare provides excellent views of the north face of Mera Peak.
Today is the day you head to the Mera Base Camp. After clearing and having breakfast, you head to the steep rocky trail. There are many crevasses along the way, so you need to be cautious. En route, you get to see majestic views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Cho Oyu, and Chamlang. You cross Mera La Pass and make way to the Mera High Camp. Overnight camping.
Today is the D-day, so you need to wake up at 1-2 a.m. and start to prepare for the summit. After preparations, you have breakfast and commence to the summit. Walking along ridges, the day changes into dawn. Since it is a non-technical route, you need to climb at a slow and steady pace. Once you reach the summit, breathtaking views of the mountains await. Some of the notable peaks you will get to see are Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Kanchenjunga, Cho Oyu, and Makalu. After basking in the glorious view high in the sky, you return to the High Camp and then descend to Khare.
You return to Kothe via the route you took to ascend. By afternoon, you reach your lodge and have a hearty dinner in the evening to celebrate your accomplishment. Overnight at Kothe.
You start the trek after breakfast. The trail today goes up, and then, you descend to cross tributaries of Inkhu Khola. Following the river, you pass by chortens and go down a steep trail. After passing another Chorten, you arrive at Thuli Kharka for overnight stay.
Today, you head to Lukla after breakfast. The trail first leads to Zatrwa La Pass, and as you descend from the pass, you get to see splendid views of Cho Oyu, Kongde Peak, and other neighbouring mountains. After you cross Chutang village, the next stop is Lukla, where you stay overnight at lodge. You join the local staff for a farewell dinner.
After breakfast, you board the early flight heading to Kathmandu. En flight, enjoy the splendid views of the mountains and the hilly landscape. At the airport, our staff will be waiting for you to pick you up, and then you head to the hotel. You can relax for the rest of the day or opt to go for a massage nearby in Thamel.
This day is spared in case of emergencies. There might be times where the flights may get shifted to the next day, or the climb might be postponed due to bad weather. In case the trip goes smoothly, you can spend this day to shop for souvenirs or relax at a café.
Today is the day you return home. Please make sure you have all your belongings with you before you depart for the airport. As per your scheduled flight, our staff will drop you off at the airport. Thank you for choosing us and hope to see you again during your next trip to Nepal!
