Embark on a somewhat off-beat trek towards Lumba Sumba Pass nestled on the deep crests between Mt. Kanchenjunga (8598m) and Mt. Makalu (8485m). Located at the sheer altitude of 5,177 meters, trekking to the Lumba Sumba pass offers another worldly and surreal experience.

Lumba Sumba Pass is a recently discovered trekking trail. The quaint, off-beat trail goes along the pristine forested hills and glaciated path. You’ll trek through the scenic Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and Makalu Barun National Park. The beautiful trail is home to the elusive cat or Snow Leopard and the endangered species of Red Panda.

The adventurous 21-day trek begins upon your arrival in Kathmandu. The highest you will reach during this trek is 5,177 meters. You’ll embark on a short flight to Biratnagar, a Terai town. Catch another flight to Suketar in Taplejung District.

The trail begins to rise along the forested hills and crosses numerous Limbu settlements like Mitlung. Walk along the massive Tamor River and pass by beautiful rhododendron forests. You will pass places like Chiruwa village, Lelep, Ela Danda, and Jongim Kharka. Traverse through Kanchenjunga Conservation Area, and catch the beautiful sights of Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Makalu, and Kumbakarna range.

Day

1

Welcome to Kathmandu! The Lumba Sumba Pass Trek begins upon your arrival in Kathmandu City. We’ll receive you at Tribhuvan International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Enjoy a short drive through the bustling streets to the heart of the city. Enjoy your refreshment. Afterward, you will visit our office to discuss the trek. You will also meet your trek guide. You can visit the local outdoor gear shop to buy or rent necessary trek gear and equipment. Overnight in Kathmandu.

2

After enjoying your breakfast, you’ll drive towards the airport. Embark on a short flight to Biratnagar, located in the heart of the Terai Region. One of the southernmost cities in Nepal, Biratnagar, offers a warm temperature and a colorful lifestyle. You’ll immediately catch another flight towards Suketar, located 104km north of Biratnagar.

Enjoy a scenic aerial sight of lush forests, a massive river, and beautiful tea gardens en route to Suketar. Upon arrival, you’ll embark on the first day of the trek. The half-day of the trek along the Limbu settlements will take you to Mitlang village.

3

Leaving Mitlang, you’ll begin trekking upstream along the Tamor River. Walk past Furumba and continue a half-hour long trail through Ulnas towards Siwa Bazar (950m). Enjoy a delicious lunch at Siwa Bazar before continuing the trek along the Tamor River until Tawa Village. A short distance from here lays the entrance to Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project. The trail descends towards Chiruwa (1246m), a small market with a couple of lodges. You’ll spend the night here.

4

Continue trekking along the mighty Tamor River and walk past the dense forest. The trail continues along with the beautiful cardamom gardens until Taplethok (1340m). Enjoy your lunch at Taplethok before continuing through Kanchenjunga Conservation Area towards Pembu (1486m). The trail begins to climb for almost two and a half hours towards Lelep (1687m), the final destination for the day. Overnight in Lelep.

5

The trek continues to run along the bank of the Tamor River and enters the dense forest. Catch the sight of wildlife inside the forest. Cross a suspension bridge and begin climbing uphill through the pine forest for about half an hour. A gradual descent for about half an hour will take you towards Gowatar (1800m).

Enjoy your lunch at Gowatar and begin climbing uphill along the two spectacular waterfalls about 100 meters tall towards Phedi. Cross the Tamor River and continue climbing uphill for about 40min towards Chautaro (a resting place). Another short walk will take us towards Ela Danda (2051m), overlooking the beautiful Kasturi Peak.

6

Begin climbing through Ulnas and Rhododendron forests for about an hour until you reach a suspension bridge. Cross the bridge and begin trekking through dense bamboo groves. If you’re lucky, you may catch sight of Red Pandas, one of the endangered wildlife species of Nepal. The trail continues towards Maguwa (2423m), where you’ll enjoy your lunch. The trail continues through maple and Ulnas forest towards Selep Kharka (2525m). A short uphill hike above the Tamor River will bring you to Jongim Kharka.

7

The day begins with a short hike through the beautiful rhododendron forest towards Ramite (2685m). You can enjoy your lunch at Ramite overlooking the mixed forest of Deodar and rhododendron. Continue trekking past Ramite overlooking the beautiful waterfall. A 45-minute walk above the waterfall will bring you to the campsite at Olangchung Gola. Olangchung Gola is a small, beautiful Sherpa village that is home to a 465 years old monastery with the golden manuscript.

8

Enjoy a beautiful day at Olangchung Gola. The beautiful Sherpa village offers an insight into the life of the Himalayan tribe. You will get to witness their lifestyle, occupation, and traditions. Make a short hike towards Olangchung Gola Monastery. The 465 years old monastery has preserved a golden manuscript. You will get to interact with local monks inside the monastery—overnight in Olangchung Gola.

9

Leaving Olangchung Gola, you’ll begin traversing through the wilderness inside Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. The sparsely populated area is home to dense pine, oak, and rhododendron forests. A half-day of the trek will take you through pine and rhododendron forests towards Jadak village. Enjoy a delicious lunch at the local teahouse. After lunch, continue trekking along the snowy path towards the campsite at Upper Langmale (3893m). Overnight in Langmale.

10

Leaving Langmale, you’ll begin trekking along the cold, pristine Tamor River. The trail continues to rise through the dense rhododendron forest. Three hours long will take you to Tangchetar (4203m). Enjoy your lunch and begin climbing the forested path for another three hours until you reach the campsite at Lumba Sumba Pass Camp. Overnight inside a tent.

Leaving Pass Camp, you’ll begin climbing the treacherous snowy pass of Lumba Sumba. Located at the sheer altitude of 5,200 meters, the trail goes past thick snow moraines. A few hours of the climb will bring you to the top from where you can catch the majestic sights of Mt. Makalu and Kumbakarna range in the west and Mt. Kanchenjunga in the east. Enjoy a packed lunch at the top, and then embark on a downhill trek towards Chaurikharka. Overnight inside a tent.

Leaving Chauri Kharka, you’ll begin climbing down through the Makalu Barun National Park. The trail goes past beautiful rhododendron and pine forests towards Thudam. A mountainous trail, you will find one of the roads leading towards Tibet while the other takes you down to Thudam village. Almost 5-6hr of the trek will bring you to the Sherpa village of Thudam (3500m) that is home to around 30 houses. Overnight in a tent.

Leaving Thudam, you’ll begin trekking downstream along the Chujung Khola. Catch the mesmerizing sight of Mt. Makalu in the distance. Walk past lush bamboo groves. Almost 6hr long trek will bring you to the village of Kharka. Overnight in a tent.

14

Leaving Kharka, you’ll begin trekking past dense rhododendron forest. The trail goes along the small settlements for almost three until you reach Chauri Kharka. Enjoy a delicious lunch and continue trekking downstream along the Arun River towards Ridha Village. A short hike will bring you to Kimathanka. Continue trekking along the Arun River to reach Chyamthang. Chyamthang is a small Sherpa village.

15

Leaving Chyamthang, begin trekking along the rhododendron forest. The trail begins to climb down overlooking the lush forested Arun Valley that is home to much exotic Himalayan wildlife. A short downhill hike will take you past Glimber Village (1585m) towards Hatiya village. Enjoy a delicious lunch at Glimber before climbing down to Hatiya. Hatiya is a small village inhabited by Bhote people.

Leaving Hatiya, you’ll be climbing downstream along the banks of the Arun River. About two and a half hours of trek from Hatiya will bring you to Gola village. You will arrive at the confluence of the Arun and Barun rivers. Enjoy your packed lunch before climbing down to Gola village inhabited by Sherpa, Rai, and Tamang people.

Leaving Gola, you’ll begin climbing along the terraced farm fields. A pleasant descent from Gola will bring you to Pathibhara, a small Gurung village with few tea shops and lodges. Enjoy a delicious lunch at Pathibhara, and then continue trekking along the terraced fields towards Gadhi (1800m). The historical Gadhi village is where the Nepalese Army fought the Tibetans during the Nepal-Tibetan War. Overnight in Gadhi.

18

Leaving Gadhi, you’ll begin climbing downstream along the Arun River. A short downhill hike will bring you to Num village (1572m). Enjoy a delicious lunch at Num, and then embark on a short drive towards Khandbari (1022m), the district headquarters of Sankhuwasabha district. Overnight in a lodge.

After breakfast, you’ll embark on a short flight from Khandbari to Kathmandu. A short fill takes you over the lush forested hills and massive rivers towards Kathmandu City. Upon arrival in the city, your guide will drive you to your hotel. You can spend the rest of the day relaxing at the hotel—overnight in Kathmandu.

Enjoy a delicious breakfast. Afterward, you’ll embark on a scenic sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley. Kathmandu is home to many exotic tourist destinations and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The tour begins with a visit to Swayambhunath Stupa, followed by a brief visit to Kathmandu Durbar Square. Enjoy a delicious lunch, and then drive towards Pashupatinath Temple. The tour ends with a scenic visit to Boudhanath Stupa. Overnight in Kathmandu.

On the last day in Nepal, you can choose to explore the nearby areas such as Thamel. You can shop for a souvenir before driving back to the airport to catch your flight back home
